The Fire Brigade
Or, How to Really Move Across the Country.

You know the expression, 'If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all'?
I think that's me, except I just have weird freaky luck. If something weird is going to happen, it'll happen to me. If a squirrel will live in a closet, it will be my closet.

If every possible weird thing could happen on a cross country trip, it will happen on MY cross country trip.

We started out innocently enough. Driving through Arkansas, and the kitties are doing so well in their carrier. I am immensely impressed with them. I don't really remember much about the first day of travel. The only thing I really recall is that we drive through Columbus (home of Drew and Natalie Dee) and I am wearing my Toothpaste for Dinner t-shirt. No one besides me is amused. Maybe this was the second day. Like I said, I don't really remember that day. Somewhere we drove through, Stan Lee was running for District Attorney. He has my vote!

DAY 2:
Driving off the highway onto a 2 lane road through some town...I see police cars. Lights. "What's going on?" I think.

"Oh my goodness! Look! It's a freaking PLANE CRASH, Shane!"

Yes. A plane had crashed into a motel parking lot, and we drove right by it. People were standing outside their motel rooms, and there is HALF A PLANE on the road next to us.

So day 2 continues.

We have decided to go to Niagara Falls, because I've never been, and Shane is always hell bent on showing me Natural Wonders. One summer I trampled through who-knows-how-many caverns. But really, it was pretty cool. Niagara Falls = A +

HERE IS THE IMPORTANT PART:
We had to sneak the kitties into the hotel, because they ARE NOT ALLOWED. We are BREAKING THE RULES. And if Jenn is BREAKING A RULE, Instant Karma states that Jenn will be swiftly punished.

About 5:30 in the morning, I wake up because of an ear piercing shrieking sound. I open the door, and that flashy strobe-y light is going off. THE HOTEL IS ON FIRE! Because I SNUCK THE CATS IN!
So we walk down 7 flights of stairs and the firemen are coming up the stairs with AXES and oh goodness the kitties and we're going to be kicked out, do you have to go to jail if you sneak in cats, and why did you have to look at Niagara Falls?

About a half an hour later, the all clear is given, and we go back to our room. The people across the hall have apparently snuck in a dog.(Is 'snuck' even a word?) So maybe it's their instant karma but I really doubt it.

So dawns Day 3.

We're only 4 hours from home. What can happen in 4 hours?

HAHA! Do not tempt Fate, lady!

We're driving down the highway...There's a car on the side of the road. Hazard lights and all. As we go by, flames are coming out of the car. THE CAR IS ON FIRE WITH A LADY INSIDE!
Shane pulls over, runs back to her car, and gets the lady out of the car. Now he and a truck driver are trying to put out the fire. They have fire extinguishers and everything.

She set her car on fire with a cigarette, she says. Those were some pretty high flames.

Eventually policemen and firemen come, and we are on our way.

Are they signs I shouldn't have left Louisiana?

Are they signs of a grand new adventure?

I don't know.

But we're here, and the kitties are settled in. Abbey's made some friends.

And thankfully, nothing's been on fire in the last week.

It was fun...but I'm glad I don't have any other road trips planned anytime soon!

Was the hotel actually on fire, or was it just a false alarm? I have been evacuated out of three buildings where there was actually a fire somewhere, but probably been through 32,587 false alarms. These always happen in the middle of the night.

But a plane crash?! And helping someone out of a burning car?!!</i> Those are two things most people never see in their lifetimes, much less both in the same trip!

I did once witness what looked like it was going to be a horrendous accident, when a woman with her infant baby fell asleep in the car and flipped it three times right before our eyes. I called 911 and helped stop some of her facial bleeding, but since the car was not on fire or in the way of traffic, our main task was to convince her not to move until the paramedics got there. I totally expected to see dead bodies, but the woman apparently suffered only minor injuries and a concussion, and the baby, safely in a car seat, came through without a scratch!

I'm thinking it was probably a false alarm, because they let us back in our room after a half-hour.

When I was 14, there was a plane crash about 3 streets away from my house. I remember my dad running over to that block to see if he could help, and turning around and yelling at me to go in the house.

I'm so glad the baby came through okay!
